   Pennsylvania Carpenter Ant (Bayer-The Ants)

There are two methods to ant control.  The first is a spray that will give immediate control, which may not typically result in long-term control.  The second is the newest form of ant control, which is baiting.  This process does not give immediate control, but will usually result in a longer time period of control.  Spraying gets rid of the ants that come in contact with the pesticide, where baiting targets the heart of the nest itself, resulting in a more permanent solution.

Some facts about ants:

  1. Ants have recently replaced cockroaches as the number one pest in the United States.
  2. More than 20 varieties of ants invade homes throughout the United States during the warm months of the year. Worldwide, there are more than 12,000 species, but only a small number cause problems.
  3. Destructive ants include fire and carpenter ants. Others ant types include the honey, Pharaoh, house, Argentine, and the thief ant.
  4. All ants share one trait: They’re unsightly and contaminate food.
  5. Ants range in color from red to black.
  6. Fire ants are vicious, unrelenting predators with a powerful, painful sting.
  7. At least 32 deaths in the U.S. can be attributed to severe allergic reactions to fire ant stings.
  8. Millions of dollars are spent each year eradicating fire ants alone.
  9. Carpenter ants range in size from one-quarter inch for a worker ant to up to three-quarters inch for a queen.
  10. A carpenter ant colony can have a long life span. Each colony is founded by a single fertilized queen that establishes a nesting site in a cavity in wood.
  11. A carpenter ant colony does not reach maturity until it contains 2,000 or more workers, which can take three to six years.
